They Saved Walt’s Brain!

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

There’s an old joke: Why did Humpty Dumpty have a great fall? Because he had a lousy Summer. (I said it was an old joke.) I dunno about a great Fall, but the Summer has been kind of frowsy; the heat has been baking my brain… and, apparently, also has baked my scanner! After some warning behavior, my ol’ HP scanner has bit the dust. Even my backup scanner won’t play nice. So, putting aside the “Armageddon Creeped Out” storyline for now (who am I fooling, it’s been ages since I updated anyway), I came up with the inspired plan to post another classic Fission Chicken story! Yes… from the vault comes the immortal tale “They Saved Walt’s Brain”! (You already know which Walt I’m talking about, don’t you?) It originally appeared in Fantagraphics’ Critters back in 1988, and it’s jam-packed with Vortoxians and Mad Science and Cruddy Henchmen and Pop Culture Figures and Fights and Explosions! Wow!

This has been making the rounds, so I’m gonna post it here, too… it’s a very, um, “spacy” cartoon that made the rounds on SAT/AM kid’s shows back in the early 70s: The Butterfly Ball with Roger Glover!

Wanna watch the Roger Corman classic Attack of the Crab Monsters? Sure you do! You can start with part 1, below, and pick up successive parts at the end screen. Even if you don’t want the whole movie, take a look at the spooky credits!

While we’re talking about the classics, let’s have a look at the opening (and ending) credits for the 1965 sitcom It’s About Time! They had a great snappy theme, and swell cartoon work that really delivered the concept!

“Imogene Coca” and “shag” on the same screen kinda gives me the heebie-jeebies.

  2. JP Morgan Says:

Yes, and it also gave the heebie-jeebies to the TV execs (maybe some British person told them what “shag” meant)… for the next season (where the astronauts got back to the present, taking the cave folks with them), Coca’s character was renamed “Shad.”

  3. JP Morgan Says:

… in fact, you can also see the much-changed credit sequence by picking out the “It’s About Time 1966-67″ icon at the end of the above clip!

  4. Bill Fortier Says:

… Coca’s character was renamed “Shad.”

There’s something fishy about those writers.

Now, about the above page: Strep can’t enjoy his sandwich?
