Mutatis Mutandis, The Chicken Won’t Stand This

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Here’s the cover for the never-published issue #5 of Fission Chicken, back during its original run from Fantagraphics! This one was going to feature Fish’s run-in with the S-Men, a parody of the X-Men. (No, I don’t recall what the “S” in S-Men stood for.) Behind our hero, we can discern a Wolverine stand-in, A Cyclops type of guy, and a biomechanical fella that’s supposed to be like Warlock, who was actually from the New Mutants. (At the time, Warlock, as drawn by Bill Sink-Witch, looked like a Ralph Steadman cartoon character… he had all these cartoony, exaggerated poses and grotesque structural changes, panel to panel.) The story was going to be “Gland Hotel,” wherein a villain offered cheap processes to give comics fans mutant powers; naturally, Fish didn’t think much of that idea. The comic was cancelled before I started drawing it… but I found the line art for the cover, and colored it up to show what might have been!

For the Video Goodie this week—since there’s that superhero parody cover up above—let’s have a look at a funny, low-budget satire of both the Marvel and DC characters. How low budget? It’s performed with action figures! Happy Hour, by JustSomeRandomGuy! It’s down below the banners.

Speaking of movies, they’re really coming up with new duds; the glossy, kiddie Star Trek reboot has been forgotten already—everybody who wanted to see it saw it in the first weekend—and then the latest Terminator sequel bored everyone, and now the dumbass Land Of The Lost movie is a big flop. (It’s based on an old SatAM kid’s show, and the filmmakers worked real hard to dumb it down.) The remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 is a big dud. And of course Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is dumb as dirt. Yawn… the excitement is unbearable, isn’t it?

Spook's FC shirt!

He might be a scary-lookin’ guy, but Spook there sure has excellent taste in t-shirts! The above panel is from Adam Black’s LOCUS webcomic (which features the title character and her struggles in long-standing feuds of demons and vampires)… turns out that Mr. Black is a Fission Chicken fan from way back, and took this opportunity give Spook a snazzy FC shirt! Fans of horror, rock, demons, vampires… everybody should go read LOCUS now!! AND NOW YOU CAN GET A SHIRT LIKE SPOOK’S! Wow! It’s available in the FC Shirt Shop! Scroll down for the banner!

Fission Chicken maquette design

Wouldn’t you like to see the above design made as an actual maquette? (Fancy word for “figure”.) Sure ya would! This design is up for votes at PatchTogether now… so if all you Chicken-of-Wrath fans reading this would indicate interest by voting… the FC maquette can be made a reality! Hotcha!

How to vote? Visit the FC maquette page… it’s necessary to sign up on the PatchTogether site (it’s cool, you won’t get spam and it does not obligate you to buy), and then click the “Vote” button. That’s it!

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a Fission Chicken animated feature? You can see a short ‘teaser’ for such by clicking the left thumbnail below! The right thumbnail will display the earlier “Squash” bit:
